The final workshop of Unleash Yourself Phase V was conducted in the school of Suneragiri Liyanage the winner of the Junior category in the Inter School Best Speaker Contest 2016. The workshop was held on the 3rd of May 2016 for Gaveliers of the Royal College Gavel Club. The program consisted of similar sessions as in workshop IV. After elaborative sessions of leadership, and public speaking, the students found the courage to stand confidently on the stage and complete the activities assigned to them successfully. The day's program was arranged by teacher-in-charge of the Gavel Club Mrs. Nilmini Jayasekara.
University of Kelaniya Gavel Club marked the end of another venture to promote public speaking and develop the communication and leadership skills of the youth. The Club is determined to travel wherever it takes to give an exposure for young speakers to learn public speaking precisely and practically and be true leaders.

The workshop at Holy Cross College Gampaha was held on the 15th of February 2016. More than 80 students including English Medium students from grade 10 and upwards, senior and junior prefects of the college participated in this event. The program was planned with sessions on leadership, speech, creativity, and most importantly education. The students enjoyed the company of the Gaveliers and interacted very well. The program was arranged by senior English teacher Ms. Sujani Karunarathne.
The workshop in Vishaka Balika Vidyalaya Sapugaskanda was held on the 2nd of February 2016 with the participation of more than 120 students. Gaveliers of the University of Kelaniya Gavel Club conducted the program focusing on bringing out the public speakers, leaders and brilliant communicators in the students. Students studying in English Medium from grades 6 to 11 were present at the workshop.
The University of Kelaniya Gavel Club has gained much reputation, by becoming the first ever Gavel Club in South Asia, with the main intention of helping the university and school community to improve their communication, language and leadership skills. Thus, the Inter School Best Speaker Contest was organized this year with much glamour, for the second time, by the Gavel Club.
The Inter School Best Speaker Contest for the year 2016 met its Preliminary round on the 1st of March with an energetic start. Hundred and fifty nine students confirmed their participation. The Grand Finale was held on the 15th of March at the Management Auditorium of the Commerce and Management Faculty. It was organized under the theme “Unleash Yourself”. The contestants faced the contest inclusive of the prepared speech session and the impromptu session. Twenty four Contestants were chosen from both the Senior and Junior categories for the Semi Final round, and ten were chosen for the Finals after a tough competition.
The Chief Guest for the event was Senior Prof. Sunanda Madduma Bandara, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. The Guest of Honour for the evening was Ms Gagani Widwa Weerakoon; the Newspaper Editor of ‘Ceylon Today’.
Suneragiri Liyanage from Royal College Colombo was crowned as the Best Speaker (Junior Category). He was also able to reserve the titles of ‘Best prepared speaker and ‘Best impromptu speaker’. Sajani Senanayake from Sirimavo Bandaranayake Vidhyalaya was awarded as the First Runner-Up and Dulesi Tennakoon from Devi Balika Vidhyalaya was awarded as the Second Runner-up. Sadunlekha Ekanayake from Holy Cross College was crowned as the Best Speaker (Senior category) with the title Best Impromptu speaker. Shavindi Gunaratne from Devi Balika Vidhyalaya was awarded as the First Runner-up with the title ‘Best Prepared Speaker’. Zahra Mohideen from Holy Family Convent, Colombo was the Second Runner-up.
The University of Kelaniya Gavel Club was able to complete the contest successfully with the dedication of all its members. The Organizing Committee would like to congratulate all the winners for their dazzling performances and thank all those who helped in numerous ways, to make this significant event a success.
