The Phase III of the “Inter-University Gender Festival” was held successfully from 20th to 23rd February 2018 conducted by the Centre for Gender Studies of the University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Centre for Gender Equity/Equality of the University Grants Commission with the participation of more than 250 undergraduates from 15 state Universities, around 700 school children and the public spectators. The main purpose is to promote public awareness on gender equity and equality.

The introductory programme was heldÂon the 20th of February 2018 at Sri Dharmaloka Hall with the participation of the guests, Prof. Uma Kumaraswami, Director, Centre for Gender Equity/Equality, University Grants Commission, Prof. Kumudu Wijewardene, Co-Chair, Gender Standing Committee, University Grants Commission, Dr. Vijaya Jayathilake and Dr. S. Jeyasankar, who are Members of Gender Standing Committee, University Grants Commission, the Registrar of the University of Kelaniya Mr. W. M. Karunarathne and Prof. B. M. Jayawardena, Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya.

The welcome speech was delivered by the Director of Centre for Gender Studies, University of Kelaniya Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe. After the speeches of the Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, the Director of the CGEE and the Co-Chair of the Gender StandingÂCommittee, held a sharing of experiences and recapping of Phase I & II by Dr. Vijaya Jayathilake and Dr. S. Jeyasankar with students and then a visual presentation.

On the 21st February, the Student workshop on ‘Introduction to Gender’ was conducted by Professor Kamala Liyanage and Ms. Vasuki Jeyasankar while the Workshop for Staff members was conducted by Professor Uma Coomaraswamy and Dr. Nishadhini Peiris.

The undergraduates representing the Universities of Jaffna, Uva-Wellassa, Sripalee Campus of the University of Colombo, Peradeniya, Visual and Performing Arts, Rajarata and Kelaniya participated in the short film screening and panel discussion chaired by the veteran filmmaker Ms. Anoma Rajakaruna while the other Universities participated in the sessions of making Dramas, Songs and Toons.

The closing ceremony of the festival was held on the 22nd February 2018 at Sri Dharmaloka Hall under the patronage of Professor Mohan De Silva, Chairperson of the University Grants Commission and Professor, D.M. Semasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. In addition, the event was graced by Senior Professor Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, the Deans of all Faculties, the Heads of the Departments, other academic staff, invitees and undergraduates from Universities of Jaffna and South Eastern.

Parallel to the performances, there was also an Exhibition was organized at Sri Dharmaloka Premises. More than 500 pupils from schools in Kelaniya - Gampaha division and Undergraduates from South Eastern and Jaffna Universities were also invited for the programme as spectators.

All the performances were appreciated and every participant was awarded with a certificate and a token of appreciation.
