Intermediate Certificate Course in Chinese Language 

(Fee Levying Course)

 

1.1. Course Name         : Intermediate Certificate Course in Chinese Language

 

1.2. Aims                    : The Confucius Institute with the collaboration of the Department of Modern Languages has designed this intermediate level Chinese course for learners who have successfully completed Certificate Course in Chinese Language at the Confucius Institute of the University of Kelaniya.

 

1.3. Learning outcomes: On the completion of this audio-lingual course the learners will be able to

  • communicate accurately and appropriately with 700-1000 Chinese characters
  • acquire various sentence patterns
  • demonstrate four language skills (speaking listening reading and writing) in Chinese
  • gain insights into the relationship between language and culture

 

1.4. Eligibility              : Candidates who have passed Certificate Course in Chinese Language or similar examinations recognized by the University of Kelaniya

1.5. Duration                : 180 hours (4 hours + 2 practical hours, 30 weeks)

 

1.6. Course Structure   : The Course consists of 03 units including Oral Examination.

  1. i. ICCL 03014 – Chinese Characters and Lexical Formation
  2. ii. ICCL 03024 – Comprehension and Composition

iii.ICCL 03034 – Chinese Cultural Discourse

 

1.7. Examination Structure: i.There are 03 question papers, each of 02 hr duration  

for the 03 course units (ICCL 03014,ICCL 03024,

ICCL 03034)

                                            ii.The oral examination will be a part of ICCL 03034.

 

1.8. Evaluation             : Attendance and participation (15%), Character writing (10%),   Written examination (75%)

Course title                      Chinese Characters and Lexical Formation

Learning outcomes       At the completion of the course unit the students will be

                                      able to  

  • identify Chinese characters
  • describe various sentence patterns

 

Course contents           Chinese phonetics including the initials, finals, tones and Stroke-

                                     order of 700-1000 Chinese characters, Various grammatical   

                                     structures

Assessment                  Assignments, continuous assessment, written examination at the   

                                     end of the course

Course title                    Comprehension and Composition

Learning outcomes      At the completion of the course unit the students will be able to

  • read authentic texts
  • demonstrate basic skills of Chinese reading
  • acquire grammatical structures in order to compose

         Chinese texts using sentence  structures                      

 

Course contents                meanings and common usage of 700 ~ 1000 Chinese Characters, texts from the prescribed books, Authentic texts on magazines, newspapers or electronic publications; Audio or video materials; Writing of simple texts, letters, dialogues, invitations.

  • display knowledge on Chinese culture and lifestyle
  • handle most daily conversations
  • acquaint with modern Chinese social system

 

Course contents             Texts from the prescribed books, Authentic texts on magazines,

                                       newspapers or electronic publications; Audio or video materials; dialogues; conversations.

  1. Certificate : i.A candidate who obtains at least “C”grade for each paper is considered to be qualified for the Intermediate Certificate in Chinese Language offered by the University of Kelaniya.

iii. A candidate who obtains a grade below C in a particular

     paper may re-sit for relevant paper in respect of the course

     for the purpose of improving the grade in three attempts

 within three years. The maximum grade that can be     obtain in this case is “C”.
