Coastal ecosystems, are regions of remarkable biological productivity and high accessibility. Clean beaches and oceans have always been an important part of our lives since they provide habitat and nesting grounds for important ocean wildlife. Therefore it is fair to believe that beach clean-ups directly contribute to creating a healthier beach environment as well as demonstrate the value of protecting and preserving the region’s coastline. GPC organized beach clean-up program because, Sri Lanka is the 05th highest ocean polluting country for plastics in 2010 and will be the 10th highest ocean polluting country for plastics in 2025. Beach clean-up program was held on 18th June 2016 at Poruthota beach in Negambo. 80 Green Practices Committee volunteers were participated to that event with collaboration of Marine Environment Protection Agency.
