Team from Faculty of Medicine, UoK wins the 5th place at the 15th IMSPQ for the Prof. A. Raman Challenge Trophy

The 15th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz for the Professor A. Raman Challenge Trophy was held on the 16th-17th of August 2017 at the University of Malaya, Malaysia. A five-member team of students from the 26th batch of MBBS students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya were semi-finalists in this event, and were placed 5th out of 100 universities who competed for the Trophy.

The students who represented the University of Kelaniya were Ms. V.T. Martin, Ms. S.H. Dissanayake, Ms. F.N.M. Nasar, Mr. J.R.P. Samarathunga and Ms. J.A.P.H. Jayasinghe. Dr. Dulani Kottahachchi, Senior Lecturer in Physiology, accompanied the team.

A Physiology Art competition was also held parallel to this and Kithmini Jayaweera from the same batch won the 2nd place out of 20 submissions.

Transforming the illness experience with Art

Kalana Mithuru Sevana and the Department of Fine Arts together with the Coordinating Centre for Students with Disabilities of the university invited staff counsellors and students for a conversation with Dr. Shánali Perera titled “Transforming the illness experience with Art” on the 14th of August 2017 at the Seminar Room of the Career Guidance Unit.

Dr. Perera (MBBS MRCP) is based in Manchester, UK, and at present, is a patient under the care of Rheumatology at the Manchester Royal infirmary treated for vasculitis, a long-term condition. In her presentation, Dr. Perera shared candidly her ‘lived experiences’ of illness and disability, of using digital art to document her illness experience and how digital art has been a catalyst for healing and in managing chronic pain. Dr. Shanali Perera interspersed her talk with her digital art and shared the findings of key research studies which have used art in healing.

This event was participated by Dr. (Ms.) Shyamani Hettiarachchi, the Director of the Coordinating Centre for Students with Disabilities, the Counselors of the Kalana Mithuru Sevana (KMS) including Dr. S.S. Weligama, the Director of KMS and the undergraduates of the Department of Fine Arts of the University.

Certificates Awarding Ceremony of the Tamil Certificate Course for Non-Academic Staff Members

The certificates awarding ceremony of the Tamil Certificate Course for non-academic staff members of the University of Kelaniya (1st batch) organized and conducted by Staff Development Centre (SDC) with the collaboration of Department of Linguistics was successfully held on the 17th of August 2017 at the Staff Development Centre.

Accordingly, 27 non-academic staff members who had completed the Tamil Certificate Course successfully received certificates at this ceremony. The objective of this course is to develop the bilingual/trilingual skills of the non-academic staff members in the University for the provision of an efficient service without any language barrier.

The event was graced by Prof. Lakshman Seneviratne, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Mr. W.M. Karunaratne, the Registrar, Dr. Bandara Wanninayaka, the Director of the SDC, Dr. C.D.H.M. Premarathne, the Head of the Department of Linguistics and the Certificate awardees.

Kalana Mithuru Sevana conducts a Training Programme for Counsellors

A Training Programme organized by the Kalana Mithuru Sevana (Student Councelling Unit) was successfully held on the 10,11,14,15th of August 2017 to train the counsellors of the university of Kelaniya.

This Training Programme was attended by many counsellors representing all the Faculties of the University. At this training programme, Mr. Prasanna Kamalsiri Perera, well experienced Counselor, Personal Development Trainer, conveyed the knowledge and practical training to enhance the quality of Counselling of the counsellors.

The certificates awarding ceremony for the Counsellors who have successfully completed the Training programmme was held on the 15th of August under the patronage of Prof. Lakshman Seneviratne, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.

This programme was participated by Dr. S.S. Weligama, Director of the Kalana Mithuru Sevana and the Counsellors of the University.
