Shoko Ito’s Japanese Solo Theater Performance ‘Samurai Grandma’ at Dharmaloka Hall, University of Kelaniya

The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Japan- Sri Lanka Embassy of Sri Lanka presented Shoko Ito’s Japanese Solo theater performance ‘Samurai Grandma’ on the 9th of October at Dharmaloka Hall at the University of Kelaniya. This event was sponsored by the Japan foundation and the purpose of organizing this event was to provide an understanding of Japanese Solo Theater.

Mr. Kogi Yagi, Charge of Affairs, Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka graced the event as the Guest of Honor. The event was also participated by Prof. D.M Semasinghe, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kelaniya, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ms. Shoko Ito, Director and Actor of “Samurai Grandma”. Mr. Takaoka Masaki, First Secretary-Cultural Affairs-Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, Prof. Bimali Jayawardena, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Aruna Karunarathne, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies, Dr. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, Head of the Department of Modern languages, R.M. Priyankara Rathnayake, the Head of the Drama & Theatre and Image Arts Unit, academic and non-academic staff members and many invitees.

The Opening Ceremony of the Centre for Heritage Studies, University of Kelaniya

The Opening Ceremony of the ‘Centre for Heritage Studies’ in order to carry out in-depth research into the heritage of Sri Lanka and overseas was successfully held on the 04th of October at the Staff Development Centre under the auspices of Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.

Senior Prof. Anura Manatunga from the Department of Archeology is the Newly Appointed Director for the Center for Heritage Studies. Concurrently, the official website of the Center for Heritage Studies (http://units.kln.ac.lk/casn/) was also launched. Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. A.H.M.H. Abayarathne, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, academic staff members of the University, many undergraduates and other invitees participated in this occasion.

Prof. Sandagomi Coperahewa from the Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo conducted a detailed lecture on the National Heritages. While addressing the gathering on this occasion, Senior Prof. Anura Manatunga, the Director of the Center for Heritage Studies, further added that the main objectives of this Centre are to maintain a database of Heritages and to extend the scope of the knowledge.

The University of Kelaniya will be reopened

The Administration has decided to resume the academic activities of the faculties of Dalugama premises of the University of Kelaniya on the 16th of October 2017. The university was closed due to a clash between two groups of students recently and it was decided to reopen the university as a result of a discussion that was held today (11th of October 2017) under the auspices of the Vice-chancellor.

Present at this discussion were Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ven. Dr. Dodamkumbure Dhammadassi Thero, the Chief Student Counsellor, Mr. W.M. Karunaratne, the Registrar, Student Counsellors and the Representatives of the Students’ Unions.

A MoU with the Rotary Club of Capital City of Sri Lanka

The University of Kelaniya and the Rotary Club of Capital City of Sri Lanka on the 6th of October 2017 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to carry out a collaborative community programme to control the dengue vector mosquito and its breeding places in Sri Lanka.

The MOU was signed by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice- Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as well as Mr. Hiran de Silva, the President of the Rotary Club of Capital City of Sri Lanka at the Vice Chancellor’s Office of the University of Kelaniya.

The signing was witnessed by Prof. Aresha Manamperi, Head of the Molecular Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Nilmini Silva Gunawardene and Dr. Menaka Hapugoda from the Molecular Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine.
