“HR IMPRESSION 2017”- a comprehensive, developmental Career Guidance programme designed to assist the students who faced the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination in 2017 was successfully held on the 8th of September 2017 at the Sunil Shantha Memorial Auditorium of the University of Kelaniya.

The purpose of this programme was to develop the competencies in self-knowledge, educational and occupational exploration, and career planning of the students. This career guidance programme also helped the students to acquire the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to identify options, explore alternatives and succeed in society.

This programme was participated by Dr. Narada Fernando, the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies (FCMS), Dr. D.U. Mohan, the Head of Department of Human Resource Management (HRM), Dr. Anura Karunarathne, the Head of the Department of Accountancy,  Dr. Chamaru de Alwis, the Director of the Career Guidance Unit, Dr. Kamal Thilakasiri, Chief Student Counsellor of the FCMS, Mr. K.K.V.L.W. Karunathilake, the Deputy General Manager (Marketing) - National Savings Bank, Mr. Heshan Karunarathne, General Manager of Easy Corporation, Ms. Sandhya Fernando, Regional Manager - National Savings Bank, Mr. Dennis Olaboduwa, Kiribathgoda Branch Manager -National Savings Bank, Mr. M.T.A.J.F. Gomes, General Manager (operational) - National Savings Bank, the academic staff members of the Department of HRM, Students who sat for  the G.C.E. A/L examination in 2017, the members of the AHEAD Students’ Association of the Department of HRM and many undergraduates.

Two-Day Guest Workshop on “Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning”

Two-Day Guest Workshop on “Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning” organized by the Department of Industrial Management at the University of Kelaniya was successfully held on the 6th and 7th of September 2017 at the Department of Industrial Management of the Faculty of Science at the University of Kelaniya. This workshop was held with the intention of introducing machine learning, image processing and deep learning techniques as well as giving the opportunity to get hands on experience on software such as TensorFlow and Python.
This workshop which was targeted at professionals in the private sector and universities was conducted by Dr. Chamidu Atupelage, PhD (TokyoTech), MEng (Hiroshima), BSc (UCSC), a researcher at the RIKEN Institute, Japan. The workshop was participated by academic staff members of the Department of Industrial Management including Dr. Chathura Rajapakshe, Dr. Suren Peter, Dr. Dilani Wickramarachchi, Dr. Shantha Jayalal, professionals of the other universities and industrial professionals.

A new Head to the Department of Mass Communication

Senior Lecturer Aruna Lokuliyana assumed duties as the new Head of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya on the 4th of September 2017. He obtained his B.A. (Special) degree in Mass Communication in 1998 and M.Phil. in Mass Communication from the University of Kelaniya in 1998. Currently, Mr. Aruna Lokuliyana works as a Senior Lecturer in Film and Television Media at the Department of Mass communication, University of Kelaniya and also reading his PhD.

“Aeshwara Winsathiya” (The Black Era) is his first Tele film that wins the OCIC, UNDA Awards. “Ranthali” (Golden Pot), “Diwul Gahe Kola Sulange Wisira Yathi”, “Mindada Gangawa”(The River of Love) “Chitranganilage Kathawa” “Udana Wewa Hadu Minissunge Kathawa” are among the semi documentary Films and documentary films directed by him.

Meanwhile he directed the short film “We Love Football” under the theme of “Football and Culture” organized by the Berlin Talent campus in parallel to the Berlin International Film Festival. This above mentioned short film was selected among best 50’s out of 623 short films which have been represented by 90 countries in the world. Then it was selected for the best 25 films to the promotional campaigns of FIFA World cup-2006 in Berlin by the World Football Federation. It was entitled as the “Film of the Day” under short films category in the 55th Berlin International Film Festival with a huge appreciation of commentators and spectators.

He has been working as a member of Panel of judges in Prominent Film and television award Ceremonies in Sri Lanka such as National Television Awards organized by Cultural Ministry in Sri Lanka, UNDA Awards for Film and Television held by OCIC Sri Lanka, National Youth Television Awards held by National Youth Service Council in Sri Lanka.

He is the co – author of “ Kalana Asapuwa” poetry book Published in 1998 “Shanthikarma Sannivedanaya” (Communication via white Magic) the work based on “White magic Communication, Published in 2001 and the book titled “Aeshwara Winsathiya” (The Black Era). He is well known as a book cover designer, graphic designer and poet contributing to the academic development.

The Duty Assumption ceremony was attended by Prof. A.H.M.H. Abayrathna, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Mapa Thilakarathne, the Former Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Senior Prof. Chandrasiri Rajapaksha, Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa, the Director of the Communication & Media Unit, Prof. Ariyarathne Athugala and other academic and non-academic staff members of the Department of Mass Communication.

A MoU with Asian School of Business Management, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India

An Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Kelaniya and Asian School of Business Management, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India was signed on the 6th of September 2017 at the Vice Chancellor’s Office.
The MoU signing ceremony was held under the auspices of Prof. D. M. Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. Present at the occasion was Prof. Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, Director, Centre for International Affairs. The objective of signing the MoU was to conduct exchange of students for Bachelor’s degree programmes and Postgraduate programmes between the two institutions and to commence joint research projects.
