Amended Action Plan of Research Council 2017-2019 with guidelines

2017/08/AP/01:  Research support during sabbatical leave

Research Proposals with objectives of achieving the national development goals of Sri Lanka to be carried in Sri Lankan HEIs or research institutes or in collaboration with foreign institutions will be considered. Guidelines for this activity are as follows.

  • University academics and other staff members entitled for sabbatical leave are eligible to apply.
  • Awarded up to a Maximum of LKR 2 Million
  • Awarded for research conducted within Sri Lanka during the sabbatical period.
  • Outcome should have the potential to publish at least 2 research articles in indexed journals. (i.e. SCI , AHCI,SSCI and other journal lists recommended by the University Research Council )
  • In an event of failure to publish 2 research papers in indexed journals from the proposed research, research council consider other means of dissemination of research information accepted by the University Grant commission.(i.e. Scholarly work, Creative work, Patents, Monographs, text books and Scientific and Literary Communications).
  • Applicants should have Google Scholar & ResearchGate accounts which have been made public with a “This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ” email address.
  • Applicant should submit progress reports on six monthly basis.
  • A self-prepared application should be submitted accordingly using the Research grant Application Format of the Research Council website (units.kln.ac.lk/researchcouncil/)
  • Application should be forwarded to the Chairman Research Council through the proper channel (Director FRC/HOD/Dean).
  • A Subcommittee will be appointed for shortlisting the applicants to be considered for the award.

(i). Chairman/RC and two members from the Research Council.

  • If the researcher cannot complete the research within the stipulated period, an extension may be given to a maximum of 1 year and in the event the researcher still fails to complete and submit the report, the awarded amount may be surcharged from the salary according to the existing financial rules and regulations of the University.
2017/08/AP/02:  Obtaining assistance from Emeritus Professors to improve the research outcomes of junior academics and young researchers

-          Emeritus Professors will be nominated through the Faculty Research Centres (FRC).

-          An Honorarium of LKR 10,000 per day and

-          Up to LKR 5,000 per half day session will be paid.

  • FRC to coordinate & facilitate this visit.
  • Aims

                                              -         (i) To develop research proposals that attract national and international grants to their                                                      disciplines.

                                   -        (ii) To provide guidance to academics who have successfully defended their PhD/MPhil

                                                  theses (either locally or aboard) to write research articles based on their thesis for

                                                  the purpose of publishing in high impact indexed journals

-          (iii) To give assistance on how to write research papers for publication in high impact             indexed journals.

-          (iv) To support any other research and dissemination activities of the Research Centre.

2017/08/AP/03: Innovative Pilot Research Project funding scheme

  • Award 3 grants annually on a competitive basis.
  • LKR 1 Million is allocated for each project
  • Project should be innovative in nature and should address an issue of national concern in creative ways / new trends within the discipline / innovative interdisciplinary work / with the potential for a patent outcome.
  • In addition, relevant Guidelines for research projects under research Support during sabbatical leave Award Scheme described above will apply.
  • Application should be forwarded to the Chairman Research Council through the proper channel (Director FRC/HOD/Dean).
  • A Subcommittee will be appointed for shortlisting the applicants to be considered for the award.

2017/08/AP/04: Research update by the University - media initiatives in collaboration with the University Media Unit.

  • FRCs should inform the Research Council of significant research findings to be disseminated during press conferences to create awareness amongst the general public. Research Council will take action to scrutinize and set priorities based on the significance of the research work before the press conference.

2017/08/AP/05: Grading of Vice Chancellor’s Awards

  • Instead of giving one award, to grade the Vice Chancellor’s Awards as 1st , 2nd and 3rd for each of the following:

-          Best Researcher

-          Best Young Researcher

-          Best Innovator

-          The academic with outstanding creative production

-          The academic with outstanding creative literary work

  • Recognition and felicitation of top 10 researchers of the university

-          As determined by ELSEVIER list of top researchers which can be verified through Google Scholar profile of the University of Kelaniya

2017/08/AP/06: Conference Support

  • The Research Council will encourage, one substantial faculty level International Conference covering all disciplines and one student conference. However, if necessary, previously established department level conferences may be continued based on the necessity and potential.  Minimum set of standards to be introduced. Further clarifications are included in the revision of guidelines. 

2017/08/AP/07: Strengthen the activities of Faculty Research Centres (FRCs) 

  • Research Council has directed all FRCs to formulate an advisory board according to the model adopted by FRC of the Faculty of Science. 

2017/08/AP/08: Continue awards schemes already established to encourage high quality academic research.

2017/08/AP/09: Continue updating the University E-repository and implement good practices in uploading to the repository. 

2017/08/AP/10Steps will be taken to register the University of Kelaniya with THE-QS World University Rankings.
