MoU between the University of Kelaniya and the Department of Forest Conservation

University of Kelaniya has been officially declared as the first green university in sri lanka in 2014 by adopting an environment policy. Since then, university of Kelaniya has implemented many strategies through Center for Sustainability Solutions inorder to cater the services in more sustainable manner. Further strengthening the activities conducted by CSS, MoU has been signed between the Department of Forest and University of Kelaniya to develop and manage 150ha of forest reserve by the university. Forest reserve is located at Karuwalagaswewa in Puttalam district. Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof. Bimali Jayawardane also assisted in making this effort success.University is planning to enrich habitat of forest reserve with the help of potential sponsors.

Streamlining paper waste management of University of Kelaniya

There is a necessity to introduce waste bins to collect waste papers from all departments in the university in order to improve the effectiveness of the waste management process. CSS purchased 65 blue color bins and distributed among all the department offices in the university to facilitate paper waste collection process for recycling.

With the intervention of CSS, 23,580 Kg of waste papers were able to collect and recycle by February 2019. Recycling of paper has generated Rs.188, 640.00 and contributed in saving 401 trees and 4716 Kg’s of Carbon emissions.

Ceremonial induction of paper waste bin distribution program was held on 02ndJuly, 2019 at the Senate Room with the presence of Prof. D,M.Semasinghe the Vice Chancellor of the U o K and the heads of all the departments in the University.

Certificate awarding ceremony of “Sustainability Leadership training program for the Youth – 2018”

The certificate awarding ceremony of “Sustainability Leadership Training Program for the Youth 2018”organized by the Center for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) was held on the 04th of July 2019 at the Senate Room of the University of Kelaniya.

The event was graced by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya as the chief guest, the Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof. B.M Jayawardhana and the Director of the Center for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) Dr. Rangika Bandara, Hundred and forty nine students representing Faculties of Commerce & Management Studies, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences received the certificates for the successful completion of the 3 months Training Program.


A one-day environment awareness camp ‘I go green’ organized by the Center for sustainability solutions (CSS) of the University of Kelaniya for the children of the staff was held on 19th December 2018 at the premises of the Faculty of Science and Landscape Department. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. R. M. Patrick Rathnayake, the Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof. Prof. B. M. Jayawardhana, Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Prof. A. Jayamaha, Chairman, Research Council, Prof. Sunil Chandra, Registrar Mr. W.M. Karunaratne, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Chinthaka Ratnayake, the Director of the Centre for sustainability solutions of the University of Kelaniya Prof. U.P.K Epa, members of CSS and members of the academic and non- academic staff were also present at the inauguration. Participants had the opportunity to get the knowledge and hands on experience on solid waste management, hydroponics and use of sunlight in agriculture and (soilless culture of plants). An awareness programme on dengue mosquito control and disease prevention was also conducted. Quiz and drawing competitions on environmental themes were held and winners were awarded.
