Classification and Cataloguing

As the library of PGIAR is based on an exclusive collection of resources on Archeology it follows a specific system of classification of its own. The inventor of this system of classification was Professor Senake Bandaranayake. Therefore, the system is titled Senake Bandaranayake Classification (SBC).

  • AC - Philosophy & psychology
  • AD - History and civilization

  • AF - Language and Literature
  • AG - Mathematics, Statistics
  • AH - Social sciences

  • AJ - Natural Sciences
  • AK - Applied Sciences

B – ARCHEOLOGY 
All works of Archeology i.e. Techniques of Archeology, Environmental Archeology, Historical Archeology, Numismatics, Inscriptions, Anthropo-Archeology, Heritage Management, Museology which does not associate with any particular zone or region or country come under this class. Subsequently, Visual Art, Architecture, Sculpture, Cultural Studies have been added to the class.

About Us

The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) was established on the 1st January 1986, by order dated 18th December 1985, under section 24A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 by the University Grants Commission. The PGIAR is a Postgraduate Institute of the University of Kelaniya. It is the prime institution for postgraduate studies and research in archaeology and subjects related to archaeology in the country.
