The Department of Physical Education provides a wide range of Sports and Recreation programmes for the benefit of internal students of the University. These activities are supported by some of the best sport facilities in the University System in Sri Lanka.

The main objective of the Department is to promote and improve the student-sporting prowess and provide opportunities to develop team and individual sports.

The Sports Advisory Board consisting of academic staff members functions in the advisory capacity.

The Sports Council appointed annually functions as the students organizing arm of the department.

 

Colours Awards 2016/2017 - University of Kelaniya

Colours Awards 2016/2017 organized by the Department of Physical Education and the Sports Council 2016/2017 was held on December 17, 2018 at Rose Garden Reception Hall, Kadawatha under patronage of Professor D M Semasinghe, the Vice-chancellor University of Kelaniya. 364 Sportsmen & women received university colours under 22 sports disciplines  those who belongs to 21 men teams, 15 women teams. F S Rishard - Best Fresher Sportswoman of the Year, H D H G Kaushalya - Best Fresher Sportsman of the Year, W R W Wickramasinghe - Best Sportswoman of the Year, N D G Lasantha - Best Sportsman of the Year. Fourteen graduates those who obtained first class honours and university colours received special awards to recognize their academic and sports excellence.

Professor S R D Kalingamudali, the Chairman and members of Sports Advisory Board including Deans of Faculties, Mr G G U Saman Kumara, Actg. Director of Physical Education, Mr B L H Perera former Director of Physical Education, Instructors in Physical Education, coaches of sports teams, colours recipients, special award winners participated in this event.
