In a remarkable display of unity towards environmental consciousness, the Green Practice Committee at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya (GPC), the Centre for Sustainability Solutions, University of Kelaniya (CSS) and have teamed up with Commercial Bank PLC, Sri Lanka. Their joint initiative aims to enhance the sustainability and natural beauty of the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) grounds and its surroundings.
On April 1st, 2024, this collaborative effort bore fruit as 400 saplings were successfully planted on the premises, generously provided by Commercial Bank PLC. The event was graced by esteemed personalities including Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Prof. A. K. W. Jayawardane, Chairman of Commercial Bank PLC; Prof. Madawa Chandrathilake, the Dean of FOM, Mr. K. K. Dharmathilaka, the Registrar the University, Director/CSS and several other distinguished guests representing University and Commercial Bank PLC.
The occasion not only celebrated the planting of trees but also marked the inauguration of construction of a new walking path adjacent to the Ayati centre of the FOM, enhancing accessibility for special needs students. Additionally, organic vegetables cultivated by FOM under the supervision of landscape division, FOM were generously gifted to all the guests, further highlighting the commitment to sustainability.
Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva commended the collaborative effort, emphasizing the significance of the partnership between the University of Kelaniya and the private sector in promoting environmental stewardship. She expressed gratitude to all involved for their dedication and hard work.
In his address, Prof. A. K. W. Jayawardane reiterated Commercial Bank PLC's commitment to supporting sustainable initiatives, particularly those involving young minds. He expressed the bank's willingness to continue supporting future projects aimed at nurturing a greener environment.
Prof. Madawa Chandratilake, Dean FOM emphasized the power of collective action in driving positive environmental change. He highlighted the symbolism behind each tree planted, representing a shared vision for a sustainable future.
