The Annual E-Waste Collection Drive Successfully Held at the University of Kelaniya

The Centre for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) and the Electronics Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) of the University of Kelaniya successfully conducted the annual E-Waste Collection on December 16, 2024, as part of the university’s sustainability initiatives. The event, held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., saw enthusiastic participation from students, staff, and faculty, resulting in the collection of over 100 kilograms of electrical and electronic waste.

The programme aimed to promote proper disposal and recycling of electronic waste, such as old computers, phones, printers, and household appliances. Collection points were set up at key locations across the university, including the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Medicine, making it convenient for participants to contribute to this critical cause. The collected e-waste is used to facilitate student education, practicing the 3R concept.

The event not only emphasized the importance of responsible disposal of e-waste but also highlighted the university’s ongoing commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future. Initiatives such as this contribute significantly to reducing environmental pollution and fostering sustainability awareness within the university community.
