Solid Waste Management

Paper Recycling Programme

The objectives of the paper recycling programme are:

  • To contribute towards an environmental sustainability by saving landfill space, conserving natural resources and reducing pollution, and
  • To cultivate an environmental awareness among university community who consume large amounts of paper daily

The targets are:

  • To separate all recyclable paper waste from other wastes at source, and
  • To supply the paper waste to waste dealers or paper mills for recycling.

  • It takes 17 trees and 1500 liters of oil to produce one ton of paper.
  • Producing recycling paper creates 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution than producing paper from virgin fibers.
What we have achieved:

Weight of recycled waste paper (2014 October- 2107 November)  – 85,020 kg

Weight of recycled waste paper within the year of 2016 – 18,036 kg

Saving from so far

  • About 2252 x 103liters of water
  • About 1445of Trees
  • About 340 x 10kW of energy.”
  • About 255 m3of landfill space”

and

  • Reduced “greenhouse gas emissions by 85* 103kg of carbon equivalent.”

From recycling in 2016, the University has saved the followings,

  • About 477 x 103liters of water
  • About 306of Trees
  • About “72 x 103kW of energy.”
  • About “54 m3of landfill space”

And

  • Reduces “greenhouse gas emissions by 18 x 103kg of carbon equivalent.”

Recycling 1000 kg of paper does the following:

  • Saves about 26,500 liters of water
  • Saves 17 trees
  • Saves “about 4000 kW of energy”
  • Saves “3 mof landfill space”
  • Reduces “greenhouse gas emissions by 1000 kg (One metric ton) of carbon equivalent (MTCE).”
