Who we are

Image

At the Floriculture Research Center, Department of Plant and Molecular Biology, University of Kelaniya, we are committed to advancing the fields of floriculture and plant tissue culture through cutting-edge research and innovation. Our work focuses on the development, conservation, and sustainable propagation of ornamental, medicinal, and aromatic plants, fostering a thriving and resilient horticulture industry.

In tissue culture, we specialize in micropropagation techniques that facilitate the rapid multiplication of high-yielding plant varieties, ensuring consistent, disease-free, and high-quality plant production for commercial growers.

Through our research, innovation, education, and industry collaborations, we strive to support a sustainable and prosperous future for the horticulture sector, benefiting both growers and consumers worldwide.

Testimonial

"My time at the Floriculture Research Centre (FRC) from 2019 to 2021 was a transformative experience. The hands-on research in plant tissue culture and the mentorship I received laid a solid foundation for my career as a scientist. FRC provided me with exceptional opportunities in both research and lab management, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone passionate about plant biotechnology."

Objectives

The objective of the project was to uplift the floricultural industry of Gampaha District by empowering growers through providing training on modern techniques of plant propagation, supplying high quality plant materials in wide range of plant varieties, advising on nursery management practices, disease diagnosis and conducting related researches to develop and establish new cultivars with unique characteristics with high consumer demand and to obtain the authorship (patent) to Sri Lanka as the country of origin. This will transform the Gampaha District floricultural industry to the international level by being able to meet the international quality standards of the export produces
