The main function of CI at UOK:
1. Chinese Language Teaching
1) Chinese Major Undergraduate Education.
The Chinese Language Unit of UOK is the first Chinese language teaching unit in Sri Lanka, and it has a strong faculty. It has set up diverse credit courses to Chinese major and non-Chinese major students in UOK. CI at UOK has a friendly cooperation with Chinese Language Department of UOK, and the teaching staff of Chinese language department of CI and CI at UOK go to great lengths to undertake different teaching tasks. The Chinese courses includes Comprehensive Chinese, Spoken Chinese, Business Chinese, Contemporary Chinese History and Society, Chinese Culture, Ancient Chinese Language and Chinese Character, the History of Chinese Civilization, the Methods of Paper-writing, Chinese Teaching Methodology, Modern Chinese Literature etc.
2) The Weekend Certificate Course
The Weekend Certificate Course has three levels --- beginner, intermediate and advanced, which are taught by teachers of CI at UOK and they are much loved by students. We have more than 1,700 students from all walks of life over the past 7 years, including university students, customs officers, the navy, company executives, local teachers etc.
2. Cultural Activities
To become a bridge for cultural exchange, and be better localized, CI at UOK has strengthened its co-operation with local schools, government, the Chinese Embassy, overseas Chinese and Chinese enterprises. In recent years, a series of colorful Chinese cultural activities have been held. They are:

3) Educators Delegation to China
4) Culture activities for Chinese festivals
5) Chinese Culture Day
6) Chinese Book Exhibition
7) Chinese Food Festival

9) Confucius Institute Day
10) Lecture Series on Chinese Language Learning and Chinese Culture
3. Regular Programs
1) Scholarships:
Confucius Institute at University of Kelaniya is the Confucius Institute Scholarship recommendation point authorized by the Confucius Institute Headquarters. In recent years, more than 300 applicants have accepted Confucius Institute Scholarships and other categories of scholarships through our Confucius Institute, and admission to colleges and universities
include Beijing Language and Culture University, Wuhan University, Chongqing University, Southwest University, Chongqing Normal University etc.
2) HSK/ HSKK Test
We have HSK --Chinese Proficiency Test (1-6 six levels) and HSKK –HSK Speaking Test (3 levels :Basic, Intermediate and Advanced),which are held five times in different month every year. It’s a gateway to studying in China, a necessary qualification for applying for scholarships and summer camps, and a help for career building.
3) Training for local Chinese language teachers
Every year we hold two training activities for local Chinese language teachers, and each time about 15 to 20 teachers from secondary schools participate in the program. Lectures on Chinese language teaching methods, Chinese teaching curriculum design, challenges in Chinese language teaching as a foreign language etc. are given by both Chinese and local professors. Teachers from secondary schools can also take this opportunity to share their experiences in teaching. There are also some cultural activities in the training program.
