The Wushu Championship Tournament;” A Master of Martial Arts “, mainly sponsored by the Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Leo Club, took place on 21st of February 2024 at the Gymnasium in the University of Kelaniya. The tournament aimed to promote the rich cultural heritage of Wushu while fostering cooperation among practitioners of the martial art.
As, it was an Invitational Championship, Athletes from the Sri Lankan Navy, Undergraduates from the University of Kelaniya and from schools took part in this event. Coming from various age groups skill levels, all of them showcased their talents, reflecting the diversity of Wushu.
The tournament commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony featuring traditional Chinese Wushu performances and the event was graced with the presence esteemed guests, including the Chairman of the Sports Advisory Committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Senior Professor Kalingamudali, the Director of the Physical Education Department, Mr. G.G.U. Saman Kumara, the Co-Directors of the Confucius Institute, Dr. Wu hongyuan and Dr. Jani Samarakoon and the Martial Arts Coach, Mr. Bodinagoda.
After the warm welcome speech by Professor Sudath R.D. Kalingamudali, then Co-Directors of the Confucius Institute, Dr. Wu hongyuan and Dr. Jani Samarakoon addressed the gathering by highlighting the Importance of practicing a sport for self-defense, enjoyment and peace of mind but not as something to hurt anyone and concluded the speech by wishing all the participants good luck and appreciated the endeavor of the Wushu Sports Club at the University for organizing this event.
Afterwards, Participants competed in a range of categories such as bare hand routines weapons routines, sparring etc. Each category demonstrated the athleticism, precision, and artistry inherent in Wushu.
In addition to competitive events, the tournament offered demonstrations by renowned Wushu masters and interactive workshops where attendees could learn basic techniques and principles of the martial art.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the tournament provided a platform for cultural exchange through exhibitions, performances, and networking opportunities. Attendees had the chance to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and forge connections with fellow enthusiasts while the Competitors who performed their best were awarded medals and certificates.
The tournament inspired aspiring Wushu practitioners to pursue excellence in their training while providing educational opportunities to deepen their knowledge of the martial art and reinforcing the Confucius Institute's mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding and dialogue.
