In anticipation of International Peace Day 2025 and under the theme “Experiencing a Week Filled with Unity, Culture, and Creativity for Social Reconciliation,” the Center for Social Reconciliation at the University of Kelaniya successfully organized a Food Festival on September 10th, 2025, near the university’s "Thel Bemma" area.
The festival featured active participation from several student associations, including the Tamil Student Association, Muslim Student Association, Chinese Club, French Club, and the Sport Management Responsible Citizen Club, showcasing the rich cultural diversity of the university.
After a nine-year hiatus, the Chinese Language Society proudly hosted its first Chinese Food Festival. Led by second-year Chinese language major students and supported by lecturers and students, the Society delivered a highly successful and vibrant event.
The festival received invaluable guidance from Dr. Wu Hongyuan, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute representing the Chinese side, and Senior Lecturer Mrs. Sulochana Ratnayaka, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute representing the Sri Lanka side and Senior Treasurer of the Chinese Language Society. Their mentorship played a key role in the event’s success. Additionally, other lecturers from the Chinese Language Unit and the Confucius Institute provided essential support. Chinese students enrolled in the Sinhala Department also contributed significantly to the event’s smooth execution.
The Chinese stall offered a variety of freshly prepared dishes, including dumplings, tangyuan, Chinese noodles, mojito, and tanghulu, which became a major highlight of the festival.
Moreover, numerous Chinese cultural activities were held, such as chopsticks games, calligraphy demonstrations, a photo booth featuring traditional Chinese clothing, sessions on Chinese philosophy, and Chinese-themed tattoos. Compared to other stalls, the Chinese stall attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd, reflecting a widespread interest in Chinese culture.
In conclusion, the event was a beautiful celebration that brought the Chinese community together in harmony and success. Looking ahead, the Chinese Language Society is dedicated to organizing similar cultural events in the future.
