Promoting Sino–Sri Lankan Friendship Through Language and Culture at Bandaranayake College

On November 3rd,2025, the Chinese Director Dr. Wu Hongyuan and the Sri Lankan Director Senior Lecturer Sulochana Rathnayake of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya, together with five international Chinese language lecturers, visited Bandaranayake College to participate in the school’s Badging Ceremony and Chinese Cultural Program organized by the college’s Chinese Language Association.

The event began with a warm welcome speech by Principal Mr. Kusuman Ranasinghe, who expressed his gratitude to the Confucius Institute for their visit. He emphasized the growing importance of learning Chinese in today’s globalized world and highlighted how language education broadens students’ international perspectives.

Following the principal’s remarks, Dr. Wu Hongyuan and Senior Lecturer Sulochana Rathnayake jointly addressed the audience. They encouraged students to study Chinese with dedication and assured them that the Confucius Institute would continue to provide maximum support and resources to aspiring Chinese learners.

After the speeches, the Confucius Institute lecturers presented badges to student representatives of the Chinese Language Association, symbolizing their commitment to promoting Chinese language and culture within the school community.

The ceremony was followed by a series of engaging Chinese cultural workshops, beginning with a calligraphy experience session. The lecturers introduced the basic strokes of Chinese characters — horizontal, vertical, left-falling, and right-falling — and guided students on brush handling and stroke pressure. As the class progressed, students grew more confident, proudly showcasing their newly written Chinese characters and seeking feedback from their teachers.

Next came a paper-cutting session, where Confucius Institute teachers demonstrated traditional Chinese cutting techniques. Their intricate craftsmanship drew admiration from the students, who eagerly practiced folding and cutting red paper under the teachers’ guidance. The session concluded with students proudly displaying their beautifully crafted paper-cut designs.

At the close of the event, Chinese Language Teacher Mrs. Lakni Kariyawasam and the students of Bandaranayake College extended their heartfelt gratitude to the Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya. They expressed their hope to further strengthen cooperation in the future through more diverse cultural exchange activities, enriching Sino–Sri Lankan friendship, and promoting Chinese language education in Sri Lanka.
