On March 15, 2024, Office of the Inspector General of Police invited gender experts from state universities to discuss critical gender issues within the police force. The meeting aimed to improve the handling of gender-based violence, promote equality, and provide better support for victims. As the leading gender center in Sri Lanka, the director of the Centre for Gender Studies highlighted challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing gender-specific concerns, advocating for enhanced training, improved protocols for handling such cases, and ensuring victim rights are upheld. Both parties acknowledged the need for collaboration and agreed on ongoing dialogue to implement initiatives like specialized training programs, community outreach efforts, and clear guidelines for addressing gender-based violence. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing gender equality and fostering a more just and equitable system within the police force.
