Kelaniya, Sri Lanka - In celebration of International Women’s Day 2023, the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Kelaniya hosted a vibrant and inspiring "Mandodari” orator contest, showcasing the voices and talents of female students across various disciplines.

The event, held on May 8th, 2023, at the B343 hall, saw over 20 passionate contestants vying for the coveted title of Best Orator. The competition featured a diverse range of topics, reflecting the multifaceted perspectives and experiences of young women today.

The judges, a distinguished panel comprising Dr. Sulochana Ramanayake (Deputy Director, Centre for Gender Studies), Senior Lecturer Indiwari Galagama (Department of Philosophy), and Probationary Lecturer Waruni Kumarasinghe (Department of International Studies), meticulously evaluated each participant on their oratory skills, content, and overall impact.

After a keenly contested competition, the following students emerged as the winners:

  • Best Orator: U.G.D.W. Preethimali (Department of Political Science)
  • 1st Runner-Up: M. Savindu Iroshan (Department of Mass Communication)
  • 2nd Runner-Up (tie): Chathuri Bhagya Ranasinghe (Department of International Studies) and W. Achini Hansika (Department of International Studies)

The "Mandodari” orator contest was a resounding success, providing a powerful platform for female students to express their ideas, articulate their perspectives, and inspire their peers. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of amplifying women's voices and empowering them to become leaders and agents of change.
