Workshop on Curriculum Design for Academic Staff Members

An online workshop on curriculum design for members of the internal quality assurance cells and any interested academic staff members was conducted by the Staff Development Centre in collaboration with the Centre for Quality Assurance (CQA), University of Kelaniya. The main objective of the workshop was to educate participants on developing curricula according to standard formats and to ensure accurately formatted curriculum documents are forwarded for approval to relevant University bodies. This workshop was held via Zoom on 24th May 2021 from 9.00 – 11.00 am.  Prof R.A.S.P. Senanayake, Director of the CQA started the workshop with a session on ‘Curriculum development’, followed by a session on ‘Notional Hours, learning outcomes and assessment strategies’ by Senior Professor Asoka Pathirathne.   Prof S.R.D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science then conducted a session on ‘Preparation of course contents’.  The workshop concluded with a Question & Answer session where the resource persons clarified on issues raised by participants.  Approximately 125 academic staff members participated in this ns workshop.

 

Bite-sized CPD session on ‘Preparing different types of questions in Moodle’

 

 

 

An online seminar on ‘Preparing different types of questions in Moodle’ under the online continuous professional development (CPD) platform of the Staff Development Centre was conducted by Mr Prabath Perera, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Commerce and Management, University of Kelaniya, was conducted on 22nd June 2021 from 3.00 – 4.00 pm. Approximately 40 academic staff members from the six faculties participated in this seminar which focused on providing an overview of the different types of quizzes that can be constructed using the online learning platform.

 

Workshop series on ‘Awakening the  Within®’ for administrative officers

 

A workshop series titled ‘Awakening the Leader Within’ was conducted by renown corporate trainer Mr Nalaka Hewamadduma, for administrative officers of the University of Kelaniya from 28th of September 2021 to 18th of October 2021. The main purpose of this personal transformation workshop organized by the Staff Development Centre was to develop effective leadership and management skills in the participants by upgrading essential soft skills in administrative staff and enabling them to become more efficient, more resilient and more inspiring leaders. This workshop series was conducted online with participants being divided into three groups according to level of experience and three workshops each were conducted for a group. A total of nine workshops were conducted. Twenty-five administrative officers completed this workshop series.

 

Certificate Course in Student Support and Guidance for Assistant Student Counsellors

 

The Staff Development Centre commenced a 16-week Certificate course on Student Support and Guidance for newly recruited Assistant Student Counsellors of the University of Kelaniya, on 1st of October 2021. This programme is being conducted in a hybrid manner with theory classes being conducted online and practical sessions being conducted face-to-face. The main objective of this course is to develop the skills of participants in promoting mental health and well-being among university students. The programme intends to develop essential skills in providing information, communication and counselling in order to enable assistant student counsellors to function effectively within the organizational context, and help students adjust to the educational institution and to become successful academically, socially and psychologically. The course was developed with the contribution of leading experts in the field of Psychology and Counselling such as Professor Piyanjali De Zoysa, Professor in Clinical Psychology, University of Colombo and Dr Enoka Wickramesinghe, Consultant Community Physician, Ministry of Health and it is being conducted by qualified internal and external resource personnel. There are thirteen assistant student counsellors following this course.

 

Bite-sized CPD session on ‘Peer Appraisal of Teaching’

 

 

An online CPD seminar on ‘Preparing different types of questions in Moodle’ under the online continuous professional development (CPD) platform of the Staff Development Centre was conducted by Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Cadre Chair and Head, Department of Medical Education, University of Kelaniya, on 27th October 2021 from 11.00 am – 12.00 pm via Zoom . Approximately 20 academic staff members from the six faculties participated in this seminar which focused on highlighting the importance of peer assessment in teaching and practical ways of conducting peer evaluations of teaching.
