German Days 2022 University of Kelaniya

The German Section of the Department of Modern Languages and the Centre for International Affairs celebrated German Days 2022 University of Kelaniya on 11th November under the auspices of the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Dean, Faculty of Humanities Dr. Sudath Senarath and the Head, Department of Modern Languages Prof. Dilrukshi Rathnayake and Registrar Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall. The Guests of Honour were Director, Goethe Institute Sri Lanka Mr. Stefan Winkler, Head of Language Department Goethe Institute Mr. Rakitha Karunarathna and German Academic Exchange Service Colombo Information and Office Manager Mr. Nadeesha Palliyaguru. The welcome address was delivered by Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena which was followed by the address of the Vice Chancellor and greetings by the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Head, Department of Modern Languages and other Guests of Honour. The event was attended by the Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies Dr. Narada Fernando, academic staff representing the Department of Modern Languages and several faculties, staff of the library, other administrative staff, and students of the Department of Modern Languages.

Students from all three batches of BA Honours in German Studies and BA Degree Programme presented eight items including songs, dances, musical interpretation of German fairy tale Snow White, excerpts from classical drama Faust by Goethe and scenes from a traditional and modern German lesson.

The winners of the Creative Writing Competition in German were awarded certificates by the Vice Chancellor and the Director, Goethe Institute. The winners securing the first place from the three years of BA Honours in German Studies were also awarded Language Scholarships by the Goethe Institute Sri Lanka. Books and teaching material were donated to the German Section. To conclude the event a session of Effective Public Speaking was conducted for all the students by Mr. Lochana Atapattu, Intern at the Language Department of the Goethe Institute Sri Lanka. The event was held under the patronage of the Goethe Institute Sri Lanka.
