The first field visit and training in 2024 for student volunteers and aspiring staff of the Centre for International Affair, University of Kelaniya was conducted on 13th February. More than 45 staff and student volunteers of the Centre took part in the programme. The students represented Faculties of Computing and Technology, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences. The program designed for the volunteers was expected to be beneficial throughout their time at the university and beyond to support visiting scholars and students.
The programme commenced with a visit to the Thuna Paha Restaurant of the Waters Edge and a session conducted by Mr. Sanjeewa Abeywickrama, Food & Beverages Manager and Mr. Parakrama Subasinghe, Training Manager of Waters Edge. The concept of Thuna Paha and an overview of the Waters Edge were presented, followed by a guided tour of the complex including a visit to the largest banquet hall of the complex. The comprehensive session covered essential aspects, providing students with practical insights that will undoubtedly contribute to their professional growth.
The programme included a visit to the Hela Bojun Hala, Battaramulla, where traditional food was savored, adding a cultural dimension to their experience. Exploring archaeological sites of the ancient Kotte Kingdom and a guided tour of the Kotte Archaeology Museum enriched their understanding and provided an educational backdrop to the entire initiative. Overall, the day was a well-rounded blend of practical learning, cultural exposure, and historical exploration.
The programme was organised by Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, Director of the Centre for International Affairs supported by Ms. Kaveesha Sandarenu, Coordinator, International Cooperation and the Staff Volunteers Ms. Madhupali Cooray, Ms. Malpathika Danansooriya, Ms. Peumica Wijethilake, Ms. Indima Rajapaksha and Ms. Sasangi Wijewardhana of the Department of Modern Languages.
