The Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS) is affiliated to the Department of Modern Languages and represents the study centre for South Asian Humanities within the University of Kelaniya. It is a collaborative interdisciplinary Centre devoted to the study of Chinese that focuses mostly on history, politics, social sciences, and culture. 

The (CCS) understands 'culture' in the broadest possible way. It explores all its manifestations, from language and literature to film and the media, from pop culture and everyday experience to religion, philosophy and science. The (CCS) incorporates all disciplinary approaches relevant to the critical study of culture, including those of history, anthropology, sociology and semiotics. In addition to viewing Chinese Culture as inevitably plural, the (CCS) sees it as an essential part of 'global culture' and consistently explores Asia’s many cultural interactions with other parts of the world.

The CCS’s role is that of a catalyst of interdisciplinary and internationalism in the study of Chinese culture at University of Kelaniya. Firstly, the (CCS) interconnects the remarkable variety of research interests of different Modern Languages at the University of Kelaniya. Secondly, it links the activities of the Faculty of Humanities with those of other faculties of University of Kelaniya; Faculty of Social Sciences, Commerce and Management and other departments and research centers. Thirdly, it stimulates interaction in the study of Chinese Culture with institutions and scholars outside University of Kelaniya and abroad.

凯拉尼亚大学中国学研究中心是一个跨学科研究中心，致力于中国与亚洲各国历史、政治、社会科学和文化方面的研究。

CCS研究中心努力理解和阐释 “文化”内涵，探索其所有表现形式：从语言文学到电影媒体，从通俗文化、日常经历到宗教、哲学与科学，涵盖了历史，人类学，社会学和符号学等多种学科。CCS研究中心认为中国文化不仅丰富、多元，而且也是“全球文化”中不可或缺的一部分，因此研究中心将不断探寻中国与世界其他国家间的文化互动。

CCS研究中心对中国研究起着跨学科和国际化的推动作用。首先，它联系着凯拉尼亚大学学者对现代语言广泛浓厚的研究兴趣。其次，它将人文学院与凯拉尼亚大学社会科学学院、商务管理学院、其他学院研究部门及中心等紧密联系。再者，它刺激了中国文化研究与凯拉尼亚大学学者及国外学者之间的互动。

1960年，中斯之间开始教育交流，中国为斯里兰卡学生提供奖学金。此后，有越来越多的斯里兰卡学生赴中国深造。

斯里兰卡大学的中文教学起始于1974年。目前，斯里兰卡有两所大学设有普通学士学位和专业学士学位。凯拉尼亚大学的现代语言系是斯里兰卡中文教学的先锋。为了加强两国的学术交流和文化合作，大力提倡中文教学，凯拉尼亚大学在2007年设立了孔子学院。为了毕业后有更好的工作前景，大学里很多学生学习中文。斯里兰卡顶尖大学对待开设中文专业的态度也越来越积极。与此同时，凯拉尼亚大学孔子学院的中国合作大学——重庆师范大学，大力支持斯里兰卡的汉语教学，在中学开设中文课，以满足中学生对汉语学习的需求，为大、中学生和在凯拉尼亚大学攻读研究生的讲师提供更多的学习中文，了解中国文化的机会。（2014年，重庆师范大学与凯拉尼亚大学签署了协议，开设僧伽罗语课程，以推动两校的合作交流）

目前，凯拉尼亚大学已有不同学院的20多位教师、学者在中国知名大学获得硕士、博士学位，越来越多的人攻读博士学位，因此， 在凯拉尼亚大学建立一个国际公认的卓越的研究中心至关重要。
