The inauguration Ceremony of ‘Chinese Rhythm and World Melody’ programme presented by the Students of the Gannang Normal University in China was held on the 12th of October 2017 at the Dharmaloka Convocation Hall of the University of Kelaniya. This programme is planned to be held in South Asian Countries. Among the South Asian countries, Sri Lanka is selected to host the first programme of “Chinese Rhythm and World Melody” programme.
The main purpose of the programme was to enhance the skills of the Students and to show their talents on the world stage. There were many singing, dancing performances, Chinese cultural presentations and creative presentations which were enriched with the talents of the students.
Prof. Qiu Xiao Yun, the Vice-Chancellor of Gannan Normal University, China, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the of the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Kumari Priyanka Jayasooriya, Co-Director of the Confucius institute, Prof. Huang Jie and many invitees participated in the occasion.

 

The delegates from the University of Kelaniya including Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor officially visited the Chongqing Normal University, China on the 14th -18th of September 2017 to extend the contract for the annual exchange of lecturers and students between the University of Kelaniya and the Chongqing Normal University via the Confucius Institute.

This agreement was signed between Prof. Zhou Ze Yang, the Vice Chancellor, on behalf of the Chongqing Normal University, China and Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the University of Kelaniya ,Sri Lanka. In addition, a MoU was also signed to construct a separate building to maintain the Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya.

Thereafter, the delegates from the University of Kelaniya including Prof. D.M. Semasinghe addressed the students who are currently studying in the Chongqing Normal University. At present, 101 students have won scholarships under the guidance of the Confucius Institute, the University of Kelaniya to study in the Chongqing Normal University and they study different courses. The delegates also visited the Department of Mass Communication of the Chongqing Normal University.

The delegates from the University of Kelaniya comprised of Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lakshman Seneviratne, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa, the Director of the Communication & Media Unit, Dr. J.A. Kumari Priyanka Jayasurooya Menike, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute & Senior Lecturer of the Department of Modern Languages and Ms. T.M. Inoka Damayanthi Tennakoon, the Bursar.

A group of 12 members of the University of Kelaniya, comprising 11 undergraduates and 1 non-academic staff member has been selected to participate in a Summer Camp sponsored by the Confucius Institute in China.The relevant air tickets for the journey were presented to them by Prof. Lakshman Senevirathna, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya on the 21st of June 2017 at the Senate Room. They left for the Chongqing Normal University in China on the 26th of June 2017. This is another outcome of the efforts taken by the vice-chancellor for the University of Kelaniya to be recognised internationally.

The Confucius Institute of the University of Kelaniya organizes this journey every year. This event was participated by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, the Director of the Confucius Institute Prof. Huang Jie and the participants of the journey.

 

“Happy Xinjiang” Art Performance, oraganized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Confucius Centre of the University of Kelaniya with the intention of developing awareness on Chinese cultural items was held on 19th October 2016 at the Dharmaloka Hall of the University of Kelaniya.

Senior Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya and Mr. Muhathar Shahasuthi, Director of the Xinjiang Cultural Council inaugurated this art performance and Professor Lakshman Senevirathne, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professor Kapila Senevirathne, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Rev Dr. Meemure Gunananda, Head of the Department of Modern Languages, Professor Huang Jie, Director of the Confucius Centre and Rev Dr. Nadalagamuwe Dhammadinna, Sri Lankan Director of the Confucius Centre too were among the dignitaries.
