Centre for Quality Assurance University of Kelnaiya

The Quality Assurance Centre of the University of Kelaniya was established under the Quality Assurance Centre By-Law No 1 of 2015, as the successor of the Internal Quality Assurance Unit, which was first established in the University in 2005. The goal of the CQA, which was also the goal of its predecessor the IQAU, is to create a culture that seeks to continually improve the quality of all academic activities in the University of Kelaniya. UGC Circular 2019/09 recommended to rename the centre as Centre for Quality Assurance, CQA,  in order to better reflect its University - wide remit.

Professor D.K.Y. Abeywardhana is a distinguished academic in the fields of Accounting, Finance, and Economics and currently serves as the Director of the Centre for Quality Assurance at the University of Kelaniya. She is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Accountancy at the University of Kelaniya. She has also served as the Director of the Centre for Management Research and as the Director of Quality Assurance of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. With over two decades of experience in higher education, she has made significant contributions to teaching, research, academic leadership, and institutional quality enhancement.

Her academic and research interests encompass Accounting, Finance, Economics, and related interdisciplinary areas. She has also gained valuable international academic experience at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, where she served as an Assistant Lecturer and Research Assistant in the Department of Economics.

Throughout her academic career, Professor Abeywardhana has received several awards in recognition of her research excellence. These include the Outstanding Senior Researcher Award (2019) and the Outstanding Senior Researcher Award third Place (2020) from the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya. In 2017, she received an Excellent Paper Award in Paris, France, for her research on The Impact of Population Ageing on Economic Growth in South Asia."

In addition to her academic and research achievements, Professor Abeywardhana has extensive experience in higher education quality assurance and programme evaluation. She has served as a Programme Reviewer for UGC, contributing to the evaluation and enhancement of academic programmes in the Sri Lankan higher education sector. Her extensive academic experience, research achievements, leadership capabilities, and strong commitment to continuous quality enhancement have positioned her to provide strategic leadership in quality assurance and academic excellence at the University of Kelaniya.

CQA Functions

QA of the study programmes

Support the university and programme offering entities (units, departments, faculties and institutes) within the university in preparation for external quality assurance, assessment and accreditation requirements.

SLQF compliance

Offer guidance and assistance to programme offering entities in defining programme objectives and outcomes, graduate profiles, and curricula which are in accordance with national reference points such as the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) and Subject Benchmark Statements (SBS).

Effective functioning FQACs

Support establishment and effective functioning of Faculty Quality Assurance Cells (FQAC) Promote and coordinate quality assurance activities within the university and in institutions affiliated to the university through conduct of workshops, seminars, development of manuals and other appropriate capacity building activities.

Awareness on QA

Promote and coordinate quality assurance activities within the university and in institutions affiliated to the university through conduct of workshops, seminars, development of manuals and other appropriate capacity building activities.

External Communication

Liaise with the Quality Assurance Council of University Grants Commission and other external quality assurance agencies as well as relevant international agencies.

Implementation of Programmes

Facilitate implementation of follow-up actions recommended in subject, programme or institutional review reports, and monitor progress in their implementation. 

Aid for Executive Administration

Assist the Vice-Chancellor in preparation of the self-evaluation report for institutional reviews.

Operation support in University entities

Guide faculties and departments in the university and in institutions affiliated to the university, in preparation of self-evaluation reports for programme and subject reviews.
