UoK Scrabllers cecure the 1st Runner-up in both Men and and Women categories at ‘The Spell 2026’, Invitational University Scrabble Championship
KELANIYA, July 2026 – The ninth edition of "The Spell," the prestigious Invitational University Scrabble Championship, concluded on a high note at the Faculty of Computing and Technology, University of Kelaniya. Organized by the Scrabble Team of the University of Kelaniya under the expert guidance of the Department of Physical Education, the tournament brought together elite wordsmiths from across the island's top universities.
The highly anticipated tournament saw fierce strategic battles among both men's and women's teams representing the Universities of Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura, Moratuwa, and Kelaniya.
Final Standings and Results
In the Men’s Category, the University of Moratuwa showcased exceptional board control to emerge as the undisputed Champions. The host nation, University of Kelaniya Men’s Team A, put up a stellar performance to secure the 1st Runner-up position, while the University of Colombo Men’s Team A claimed the 2nd Runner-up spot.
The Women’s Category witnessed a dominant display by the University of Colombo Women’s Team A, who clinched the Championship title. Showing great resilience, the University of Kelaniya Women’s Team A earned the 1st Runner-up trophy, while the University of Sri Jayewardenepura Women’s Team finished as the 2nd Runner-up.
Individual Brilliance
The championship also honored the most outstanding individual minds of the tournament:
- Best Player (Men’s Category): Kavindu Malawaraarachchi (University of Moratuwa)
- Best Player (Women’s Category): Theruni Karunaratne (University of Colombo)
Closing Ceremony
The glamorous awarding ceremony was graced by Professor Dr. Anuradhani Kasturiratne, Chairwoman of the Sports Advisory Board of the University of Kelaniya, who attended as the Chief Guest and commended the participants for their high level of competitive spirit.
Among the other distinguished officials present to congratulate the winners were Mr. G. G. U. Saman Kumara (Director of Physical Education) and Ms. Piyumi Dissanayake (Instructress in Physical Education), marking the successful conclusion of another landmark chapter of 'The Spell'.
