Workshops of the CGU

The Director of Career Guidance Unit made a formal written request from all the Faculties to provide a date and time to have awareness raising programmes related to Career Guidance for all the undergraduates. As a result of this, the below mentioned workshops were conducted based on requests made by certain Departments.

The aim of the event was to give a clear idea about the following to the new students.

This workshop was attended by the undergraduates of the Faculty of Science. The Dean of the Faculty of Science, The Director of the Career Guidance Unit, the Academic Advisor of the Faculty of Science, The Senior Student Counselor of the Faculty of Science, the Head of the Department of Botany and the career counselors of the Career Guidance Unit participated in this event.

This workshop consisted of various practical activities which provided the students with training to maintain mindfulness. The student feedback confirmed that this workshop was really satisfactory and effective.

This special programme conducted by the Career Guidance Unit in collaboration with Faculty of Science was for all the undergraduates of the Faculty of Science. The resource person of the event was Mr. Sadamal Ranathunga, the Deputy General Manager of Mas Holdings who was also an alumnus of Faculty of Science. The Dean of the Faculty of Science, The Director of the Career Guidance Unit, the Head of the Department of Botany, Dr. Nalin Warnajith, Dr. Aruna Wanninyake and Career counsellors participated in this event.  This programme was really satisfactory and effective for the students.

Name of the program – Developing Leadership & Managing Social Media Related Crimes

This special programme conducted by the Career Guidance Unit in collaboration Faculty of Science was for all the undergraduates of the Faculty of Science. The resource person of the event was the Superintendent of Police, Mr. Nisantha Chandrasekara who was also an alumnus of Faculty of Science. The Dean of the Faculty of Science, The Director of the Career Guidance Unit, the Head of the Department of Botany, Dr. Nalin Warnajith, Dr. Aruna Wanninyake and Career Counsellors participated in this event.  This programme was really productive and important for the students. In fact, the value of this kind of programmes is apparent by the requests made by the students to organize programmes of this nature in future.

(How to correctly process a Curriculum – Vitae and Career Path and Career Development)

This workshop was attended by the first year students from the Department of Commerce and Financial Management studies. The CGU Director, the Head of the Department, the coordinator of the workshop Mr. Hashan Wimalasiri, CGU Career Counselors Ms. Sandhaya Amarasinhe and Ms. Subha Rathnayaka also participated in the event. The workshop provided the undergraduates with valuable training on how to design a CV following the latest formats. The Head of the Department noted that the workshop was really productive and fruitful.

This workshop was attended by the first year students from the Department of Mathematics. The CGU Director, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, the Head of the Department, the coordinator of the workshop Dr. Nadeeka Premarathna, CGU Career Counselors Ms. Sandhaya Amarasinhe and Ms. Subha also participated in the event. The workshop provided the undergraduates with a comprehensive understanding of thinking patterns that are useful in leading a successful professional life. The student feedback indicated that this event was really successful.

This workshop was attended by the third and fourth year students from the Department of Geography. The CGU Director, the Head of the Department, the coordinator of the workshop Dr. A.G. Amarasinhe, the Academic Advisor for the Faculty of Social Sciences Dr. Nadeesha Gunawardhana, CGU Career Counselors Ms. Sandhaya Amarasinhe and Ms. Subha Rathnayaka also participated in the event. The importance of such workshops in developing soft skills of students from the Faculty of Social Sciences was emphasized at the event and the students were also provided valuable guidance to develop their professional life.

A special soft skills development workshop entitled “Empower ME” was conducted by the Career Guidance Unit in collaboration with the Employee Federation of Ceylon on the 20th June 2019 at the Career Guidance Unit, Training Centre. Undergraduates representing all faculties attended this occasion and one of the highlights of the event was the attendance of 8 students from the Faculty of Medicine. This programme was helpful for the development of the soft skills of the undergraduates and to offer guidance and to create awareness of opportunities related to their career. All the participants were provided with a valuable certificate.

Career Guidance Unit in collaboration with Venture Frontier Lanka organized a special workshop in order to offer guidance and motivate the undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya towards the field of entrepreneurship. The event was co-sponsored by the two students’ associations, Inventor Club and IMSSA (Industrial Management Science Students’ Association). The workshop was held on the 05th July 2019 from 3.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. on the 4th floor of the A 7 Building of the Faculty of Science. 175 undergraduates representing of the faculty of Science participated in this event. The student feedback indicated that these programs were really productive for the students.

A special programme was organized by the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics for all undergraduates studying Physical Sciences on the 12th July 2019 from 4.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. in the A7 4th floor hall in the Faculty of Science. The objective of the programme was to motivate the students to develop the necessary skills and talents to have a successful career in the private sector after completing their university education. The topic of the programme was “How to achieve fulfilling careers” and the resource persons were Mr. Sahan Sudheera, Assistant Manager Operations and Ms. Sevanthi Pillai, Senior Executive Human Resource Development of MAS Intimates Siluets Pvt. Ltd. 215 undergraduates studying Physical Sciences attended the event and their feedback indicated that the programme was really helpful for their career development.

 The Career Fair 2019 organized by the Career Guidance Unit of University of Kelaniya was ceremoniously launched on the 13th December 2019 at Sri Dhramaloka Hall. This is an iconic event of the university calendar as it is organized with the aim of creating career opportunities for the undergraduates by introducing potential employers and by providing the undergraduates with professional exposure.

The ceremony started with the welcoming of the Vice Chancellor and other distinguished guests and the first item of the event was the launching of the Career Fair 2019 magazine. It was held at Auditorium, Department of Industrial  Management  in the Faculty of Science. The occasion was graced by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor D.M. Semasinghe and Director of the Career Guidance Unit. Deans of the Faculties of Commerce and Management Studies, Science, Humanities and Graduate Studies, Senior student  counselor, Academic and Non academic staff members, Career counselors and Heads of the several companies  participated in this event.

This was followed by the most important item of Career Fair 2019, which was the conducting of interviews for undergraduates seeking employment opportunities by representatives and officials from the co-operate sector and other institutes. 34 companies took part in this   A total number of 325 undergraduates participated in the interviews, representing all faculties except the Faculty of Medicine.

This programme conducted by the Career Guidance Unit in collaboration with the Department of Plant and Molecular Biology for undergraduates of the Department of Plant and Molecular Biology. The resource person of the event was  Mr. Viraj Saman Kumara ,Managing Partner of IBT Consultants ( Chartered Accountants). The Director of the Career Guidance Unit, The Coordinator and the Lecturers of the Department of Plant and Molecular Biology  and Career counsellors participated in this event. The student feedback indicated that this programme was really productive for the students.
