The life of everyone on earth was so calm and quiet before it hit to the effect of the Covid 19. It is a kind of virus that propagated widely at a speed that we never expected. The world was alarmed and it affected every sector including the health sector, businesses, education, transportation, etc. Among them, millions of children and university undergraduates were under pressure because they could not able to get the proper education they hoped for. And, the word “online education” came into the world and it was tremendously popular ever than before.

Modern technology acts as a major in career success in this digital era. Its advantages and disadvantages are two sides of the same coin. Although it provides numerous benefits, the career would lead to downfall without proper use. People have to spend a lot to use modern technology. Therefore effective use of technology for a successful career is worth exploring. 

සාමාන්‍යයෙන් අපි නිතරම තවත් කෙනකුගෙන් අහන ප්‍රශ්නයක් තමයි මම කොහොම කෙනෙක් ද? මම මොන වගේ කෙනෙක් ද? ඔබට මොනවද මං ගැන හි‌තෙන්නේ මෙන්න මේ වගේ ප්‍රශ්න අනිවාර්යෙන්ම ඔබත් ඔබේ ජීවිතයේ කෙදිනක දි හෝ වෙනත් කෙනකුගෙන් අසන්නට ඇති. මේ ලිපිය ලියන මමත් එහෙමයි. ඒ, ඇත්තටම මම කොහොම කෙනෙක් ද? මොන වගේ කෙනෙක් ද? කියලා තවත් කෙනකු මාර්ගයෙන් දැනගන්නට  තිබෙන ආශාවට. කැමැත්තට ඔබත් එහෙම හිතනවා ඇති. 

What about our cheerfulness in childhood with books, cartoons etc.? We spent a whole new world behind our parental care. We were so delighted to enliven the minds with the sounds of words on a page of our much-interested book. It could be the Harry Potter or Sherlock Holmes book series. We enjoyed them as it was the only miracle living on earth. Both book series are by British authors. And, we were not more knowledgeable in the English language. But we know the plot of the story by heart. How marvellous it is! The role of the translator comes to appear in this matter.

දේශගුණය හා කාලගුණය යනු අපට නිරන්තරයෙන් අසන්නට ලැබෙන ස්වභාවික සංසිද්ධීන් දෙකකි. නමුත් ඇතැමෙක් මෙකී වචන ද්විත්වයම නිසි අවබෝධයකින් තොරව භාවිත කරනු පෙනේ. බැලූ බැල්මට සමාන සංසිද්ධීන්  දෙකක්  ලෙස පෙනුනද දේශගුණය හා කාලගුණය එකිනෙකට වෙනස් වූ පරිසර තත්ව දෙකකි. කාලගුණයේත් දේශගුණයේත් මාධ්‍යය  වන්නේ පෘථිවි ග්‍රහයා වටා තිබෙන වායු ආවරණය නොහොත් වායු ගෝලයයි. යම් කිසි ස්ථානයක යම් කිසි වේලාවක් තුළ වායු ගෝලයේ පවතින තත්වය නොහොත් ස්වභාවය ‘කාලගුණය’ ලෙස හැඳින්විය හැකිය. එය දිනෙන් දින,  පැයෙන් පැය හෝ විනාඩි ගණනකින් වෙනස් විය හැකි තත්වයකි. මෙම වායු ගෝලීය තත්වය යනුවෙන් අදහස් වනුයේ  උෂ්ණත්වය, වර්ෂාපතනය, ආර්ද්‍රතාවය, වායු පීඩනය, සුළඟ යන සංසිද්ධීන්ය. යමෙක් ‘අද වැහි දවසක්’, ‘ඊයේ කොළඹට මි.මී.50ක වර්ෂාවක් ලැබී ඇත.’ ‘හෙට නිරිත දිග මෝසම් සුළං වේගවත් විය හැකිය.’ යනුවෙන් පවසන්නේ  එකී වායු ගෝලීය තත්වයන් නොහොත් කාලගුණික තත්වයන්ය.

ඔබ දැන  සිටියා ද ලෝකයේ සිටින සියලු දෙනා එකම ආකාරයකට භාෂා උපාර්ජනය කරන බව, එසේත් නැත්නම් සර්වමය රටාවකින් යුක්ත බව. ලෝකයේ  ජීවත් වෙන සියලු දෙනාම එකම ආකාරයකට භාෂාවක් උපාර්ජනය කර ගන්නේ කොහොමද යන්න කුතුහලය දනවන්නක්. ඓතිහාසික වාග්විද්‍යාව දෙස හැරී බැලීමේදී 1800 අග භාගයේ දී කුඩා දරුවන්ගේ භාෂා උපාර්ජනය ගැන පර්යේෂණ සිදු කිරීමට භාෂා විද්‍යාඥයින් මුල් වී ඇති අතර  කාලයාගේ අවෑමෙන් අද වන විට බොහෝ දෙනෙකු භාෂා උපාර්ජන සිදු වීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් පර්යේෂණ සිදුකර තිබේ.  1950 දශකය වෙන තෙක් නොකඩවාම මෙම අධ්‍යනයන් සිදු වෙමින් පැවති මුත්  වාග් විද්‍යාඥයින්ට භාෂා උපාර්ජන පිළිබඳ නිශ්චිත  නිගමනයකට එළැඹීමට නොහැකි විය.  ආගමික බලපෑම ,විවිධ ලෙඩ රෝග වලින් යුතු අය ජීවත් වීම හා තාක්ෂණික අතින් නො දියුණු වීම හේතුකොටගෙන මෙම පර්යේෂණ අසාර්ථක වී ඇත. නමුත් 1950 වර්ෂයේදී බී .එෆ් ස්කිනර්  නම් වාග් විද්‍යාඥයා  භාෂා උපාර්ජනය සම්බන්ධයෙන් පර්යේෂණ සිදු කිරීමට මුල් පිරීය. ඔහු වාචික ආචරණය නමින් ඔහුගේ පර්යේෂණ එළි දක්වා ඇති අතර එහි දී දරුවන් මුහුණ දෙන ගැටලුවල ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස භාෂා උපාර්ජනය ඇති වෙන බව සොයා ගත්තේය.

When the deadly virus called covid-19 has influenced our island nation, the word 'online' is spelled out by each and every person in the country. It was not a common situation not only for Sri Lanka but also for the whole planet. Doing one's daily work by using the internet is simply identified as 'online working'. It is an ordinary process in most developed countries when covid-19 has arrived. It is not as ordinary as them for the majority of Sri Lankans though. As a developing nation, we are struggling with IT facilities including IT laboratories, IT teachers, a low network of connections, etc. When these were going on, covid-19 entered the country and it made a novel path to form an online workplace in every sector throughout the island.

Language is the communication tool of human beings. It is achieved in human beings' intelligence only. Words utter ideas, emotions, suggestions on our mind through the bridge of language. It depicts who we are among other species on planet earth. We are much more familiar with our mother tongue because of the usage at home and the surroundings where we spend time in. Apart from the mother tongue, there are many languages which are widely spoken all around the globe. As undergraduates, how does language knowledge affect us? That is a critical juncture to discuss these days as we are under the power of a global village.
